New Agreement with Wiley Publishing Opens Access to More Penn Research

Through a new three-year agreement with Wiley, effective 2024-2026, Penn-affiliated students, faculty, researchers, and clinicians will be able to publish their articles open access in Wiley’s hybrid (subscription-based) journals without the burden of paying their own article processing fees.

“This landmark agreement with Wiley Publishing propels our commitment to democratize knowledge and foster innovation, ensuring that the fruits of Penn's academic research are accessible to all,” says Brigitte Weinsteiger, Interim Director and Gershwind and Bennett Family Senior Associate Vice Provost for Collections and Scholarly Communications.  

Opening Penn publications gives scholars worldwide an opportunity to access cutting-edge research, while also benefiting the authors by making their work read more widely and cited more often. In alignment with the University’s new strategic framework, In Principle and in Practice, the Penn Libraries is providing more avenues for scholarship to be published open access, removing barriers for collaboration across disciplines, opening possibilities for research breakthroughs, and contributing Penn’s innovative scholarship to the world.  

Building on a solid foundation of open access advocacy, the Penn Libraries has previously partnered with leading publishers like SAGE publishing, Cambridge University Press, and Elsevier to make Penn scholarship available to the world. These collaborations, along with a suite of tailored author support services—including online resources, individual consultations, and interactive workshops with Penn librarians—empower Penn authors to navigate the open access landscape with confidence.

The Penn community will also continue to enjoy comprehensive access to Wiley’s expansive library of 1,360 journal titles through this agreement. One of the world’s largest academic publishers, Wiley’s journals cover the full spectrum of life, health and physical sciences, in addition to social sciences and humanities.
