Dr. Cecilia Segawa Seigle, GR’71 Ukiyo-e Archive and Library

Dr. Cecilia Segawa Seigle, GR’71, Professor Emerita of Japanese Studies in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations of the University of Pennsylvania, has given the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts an extraordinary collection of Japanese ukiyo-e prints from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, to be used by faculty and students of Japanese art and culture.  According to Dr. Seigle, “I think the students and public should see not just Hiroshige, Hokusai, and Utamaro, but appreciate less known artists like Harunobu, Kiyonaga, Buncho, Eishi, Eisho, Shunman, Masanobu, etc.” So, while the Dr. Cecilia Segawa Seigle, GR’71 Ukiyo-e Archive and Library contains rare copies of works by Utagawa Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai, and Kitagawa Utamaro, it also contains works by some of these other artists, including Ippitsusai Bunchō, Suzuki Harunobu, and Yoshida Tōshi. This important gift contributes to the Kislak Center's growing collection of Japanese prints available for research by students and scholars
