Bookbinding: Paper Case with Locking Spine

Come and bind your own book at Common Press! In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn how to sew the text block using the French link stitch, how to fold the paper case, and how to fit the two parts together.

The stitch is inspired by a binding in Karen Hanmer’s book, Contemporary Paper Bindings, in which she notes: “French Binder Nadine Dumain presented this paper case structure in 2010 as an option for conservators seeking noninvasive solutions for binding rare materials.”

Use it as a notebook or sketchbook, a gift, or a model for additional handmade books.   All supplies will be provided freely. No prior bookbinding experience necessary; all types welcome! (RSVP is required)
